Being Censored

In our free write journal the other day we were asked whether or not we've ever been denied ideas/materials/points of view because of censorship. And I realized that this has happened to me without the word censorship jumping out at me.

When I was younger I always would want to watch movies over at friends’ houses or with my older brother that were rated R. And for a long time my parents denied me permission. I really wasn't concerned that my parents would ever find out so I would always go ahead and watch the movie anyways. Looking back on it now it was probably with good reason that my parents didn't want me to watch these movies, because I'd usually end up scared out of my mind and up all night afraid to go to bed.

Another time I'm being censored from things is on almost a daily basis, the school computers have a lot of sites blocked. And while it's mostly the sites that include games and things that'll keep you off task in the computer lab, there are some that I need for whatever class I'm in. And that’s when the censorship can get the most frustrating.

I agree with you 100% on both paragraphs. When i was younger, i also would watch movies that weren't meant for me at that age. There's a reason why they put ratings on it such as "R" usually for violence or sex.
And as for the computers here at school, i don't think they need to block so many sites, if they see someone playing games, which they're able to, just talk to that one person, don't hurt everyone else's freedom because of a select few!

I say that we have a complete revolution over the techies. i found an official obama site that was blocked once. and last year even some federal court sites were blocked when we tried to do our political science projects.

So a total revolution could be a way to solve this injustice. if we found a way to do it.

I was definitely trying to get info for an AP Euro project here, and it was blocked. I was so pissed!

Seriously, private schools don't even block internet sites, this school is a little to overly protective. It drives me crazy!

And I agree with Anthony, it's time to start a revolution! lol

It is true that some things should be censored like when you were little you shouldn't be able to watch the "R" movies; however, there should be a point in time that it should be our choice to check wether or not a site or a movie is acceptable for us to watch. It is kind of crap that the internet is blocked but there are reasons for it that actually make sense such as ban width.

Yeah the techies are very bad at what they do they don't even go through the time to block the sites that need to be blocked they sort them out into catagories and block them so they are censor happy

I'm not lost in the world. I'm just taking a detour. said...

well i can see both sides on the rated r movies. also i agree with you about the sites. i came from a school where there was very basic blockage and they trusted us not to be on myspace or facebook.

i totally agree with you sami.
They block Yahoo which is a search engine. I dont get it. They should trust us and only block the necessary websites.
